"May Tapestry be a picture of that unity amidst diversity."
- Deric Thomas
A Tapestry is born
In 2007 God put it into the heart of Pastor Deric Thomas to start a church that would bring people together from the diverse communities of Birmingham to unite around the worship and service of God (Is. 2:1-5, Jn. 3:16). This church would be a tapestry of God’s grace weaving together people from various backgrounds. This faith family would be characterized by humility, love, and unity instead of division, hate, and pride (Eph. 2:13-16, 4:3-6, Gal. 3:27-28). On September 9, 2018 Tapestry Church had its first worship gathering with the help of the very first Team Tapestry. That morning over 375 people came to worship Christ and affirm the vision for this kind of unity amidst diversity in Birmingham.
Unity Amidst Diversity
Since the first gathering, God has graciously continued to bring together a tapestry of people from all over Birmingham who represent the glory of Heaven that we only get a glimpse of on Earth. From the outset, Tapestry has wanted to see as many people as possible come to know, love, and honor God, people, and our purpose and help as many people as possible grow in Christ. Jesus is worthy of the praise of all the people of Birmingham and the world, and He has called us to be a part of seeing His vision come to full fruition (Rev. 5:9-12).
God is moving all human history toward the ultimate expression of this integrated tapestry (Rev. 7:9-10). Jesus prayed for this tapestry and for its unity amidst diversity to show forth God’s loving and holy oneness (Jn. 17:21). Jesus taught us to pray for this tapestry to come on earth as it is in heaven (Matt. 6:10). The Father has heard His Son’s prayer and He has heard ours. The Spirit of God is empowering us to realize Jesus’ prayer here in Birmingham (Acts 2:4-11, 13:1-3, Zech. 4:6). The maturity, growth, and success of this tapestry is guaranteed (Matt. 16:18, Ps. 67:1-2)!
We know the end of God’s story, and He ultimately wins! How about your story? Have you chosen the happy ending that only comes in and through Jesus Christ? We would love for you to join us as we seek to “Live the Tapestry!”
strives to know, love, and honor God, people, and our purpose. God will be faithful to transform us into the image of Christ as we pursue him with everything we have.
'Tapestry' is more than just our name, it's our calling. To live in unity amidst diversity and to make Jesus known is what we strive for everyday in all the different facets of our lives. We want to be a people marked by the tapestry of grace that God is weaving in our city and around the world.
